Please note that there are currently no centres running TEAM T1 programs in Australia. We hope to have centres running the program in the future. If you are interested in running TEAM T1 in your centre, please contact us.
TEAM T1 is a structured, self-management, education program for adolescents aged 14–18 years with type 1 diabetes.
It is based on the established Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) program. DAFNE is a five-day program for adults with type 1 diabetes designed to teach people with diabetes the skills needed to achieve intensive insulin therapy with multiple daily injections (MDI), and optimal diabetes self-management.
TEAM T1 has been adapted from the adult program to meet the developmental and psychological needs of adolescents. The revised curriculum was informed by a review of the literature, a pilot program and interviews with adolescents. A survey of health professionals and consultation with an expert reference group was also undertaken.
Below are some quotes from health professionals who participated in the pilot program in 2010:
“TEAM T1 allows teenagers to have flexibility and spontaneity in their life. It allows them to eat when they like and teaches them to adjust their insulin appropriately.”
“This course teaches adolescents to work out their insulin to carb ratio. This can result in less hypos, better HbA1c and better quality of life.”
